James Eliot Merk, born on November 1, 1942, in Santa Clara, California, bid farewell to this world on January 9, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. As he was fondly known, Eliot embarked on a journey that took him from the shores of California to the tropical paradise of Hilo, Hawaii, and eventually to the warm embrace of Arkansas for the past 13 years.

Eliot leaves behind a legacy of love and accomplishment. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl Merk, and cherished siblings, Emily Danford and Richard Merk. His memory lives on through his children, daughter Sydney Merk-Reoutt, son Jason Merk, stepdaughter Jennifer Hurst, and hanai (informally adopted) daughterYuri Yoshida and the joy of his later years, his beloved grandchildren Taylor Killackey, Max Reoutt, and Aiden Killackey plus hanai granddaughter, Caroline Hurst.

A masterful contractor in Hilo, Hawaii, Eliot was renowned for his commitment to quality work, earning him the prestigious Excellence in Contracting Award in 1991. His skills and dedication left an indelible mark on the community he served. Beyond his professional achievements, Eliot found his true passion in the skies as an accomplished pilot. He became a familiar sight in Hawaii, soaring through the clouds in his red and white Moony 201, his airborne chariot.

Eliot was not only a skilled aviator but also a fashion aficionado, known throughout the islands for his distinctive hats and Hawaiian feather hat bands, or lei hulu. These adorned not only his head but also symbolized his vibrant spirit and connection to the rich cultural tapestry of Hawaii.

A devoted Rotarian, Eliot lived the Rotary Pledge every day of his life, embodying the principles of service, fellowship, and integrity. His commitment to community and humanitarian efforts reflected his generous and compassionate nature.

Known for his charm and charisma, Eliot was a true gentleman and a ladies' man, leaving a trail of smiles and warmth wherever he went. His zest for life, adventurous spirit, and unwavering kindness endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
