John "Jay" Shelby Smith, Jr. of Greenbrier (formerly of Benton) was born on April 28, 1943 in Everton, Arkansas and departed on August 14, 2024.  Jay was an optimist and faced life's challenges with patience, dignity, and respect. He was a humble man with simple beginnings. After graduating from Bruno High School, he became a soldier in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Korea. He returned to Arkansas to pursue a career in broadcasting. He became one of Arkansas's most popular radio disc jockeys while working at KLRA and KSSN. He was on the airwaves for over 40 years spinning records, announcing play-by-play for college and high school sporting events, and conducting interviews with country music stars, politicians, and sports figures. His voice was briefly silenced after suffering a stroke, but he battled back and returned to the air for two more years before retiring.

Jay was known across the state for his smooth voice, infectious smile, quick wit, and kind heart. He was of the Baptist faith. Jay was active in the community and volunteered many hours coaching youth baseball, emceeing countless fundraisers and beauty pageants, and as the public address announcer for Bauxite Miner football games. He was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan and never missed a pitch.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Shelby, Sr. and Willie Smith and 5 Siblings.

Left to cherish his memory, loving wife of 59 years, Shirley (Nix) Smith; his sons, Tim (Tracy), Terry (Erika); his grandchildren, Robert Westerman (Carly), Brittany Lines (Lance), R.J. Smith, Katie White (Nick), Braxton Smith, and Brock Smith; his great-grandchildren, Willa Westerman, Sienna Lines, and Case Westerman.

Private family services will be held.
