Melvyn Errol Huddleston, 84, passed away on June 19, 2026, leaving behind a life defined by service, integrity, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his family.

Born on November 23, 1941, near Batesville, Arkansas, Mel was the son of William "Preston" Huddleston and Alma Britten Huddleston. He attended Cave City schools and graduated in 1959.

Following high school, Mel proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1964 as part of the Naval Air Forces. Stationed aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard in the Pacific Ocean, he served as an Aviation Electronics Technician (Radar), attaining the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. In this role, he maintained and repaired sophisticated airborne radar and electronic systems essential to naval aviation operations. During his military service, he also served as a member of the military police before returning home to pursue his education.

Mel attended the University of Arkansas, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1968. He went on to build a distinguished career as an electrical engineer, eventually settling in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, after accepting a position with Weyerhaeuser. He remained with the Pine Bluff mill through its various ownership and name changes, ultimately retiring as Plant Engineer at Delta Natural Kraft. Throughout his career, he was respected for his intelligence, steady leadership, and exceptional work ethic.

In 1977, Mel married Phyllis Kizer, and together they welcomed their daughter, Dr. Lisa Bearden (Bryan) of Bentonville. He is also survived by his two stepsons, Eric Scott (Amy) of Little Rock and Christopher Scott of Malvern; his sister, Janie Hester (Doug) of Katy, Texas; his brother, Ronald Huddleston (Jane) of Cherokee Village; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

Mel was a proud grandfather to Britten Claire Bearden, Beckham Bearden, Rebekah Llewallen, and Mary Elizabeth Huggins, and a cherished great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren.

Those who knew Mel will remember him as a quiet man whose words carried weight. He never sought recognition, yet he earned the respect of family, friends, and colleagues through his intelligence, humility, and dependability. He was known as someone who could fix just about anything. If he didn't know the answer, he would patiently help you find it. He had an engineer's mind, a servant's heart, and an unshakable sense of responsibility. His quiet confidence inspired trust, and, as many who knew him observed, when Mel spoke, people listened.

In retirement, Mel enjoyed researching his family's genealogy, preserving the stories and history of those who came before him. He believed family mattered deeply and took great pride in ensuring those memories would be passed on to future generations.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Preston" and Alma Britten Huddleston; his sister, Eddie Ann Boling; and his brother, William Preston "Sonny" Huddleston.

Mel's greatest legacy is not found solely in his military service, education, or distinguished engineering career, but in the example he set through a lifetime of quiet character, humility, hard work, and love for his family. His steady presence, wisdom, and gentle strength will be deeply missed, and his memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

A celebration of Mel's life will be held in his hometown at a later date.
